Is it true "dirty coal" can be developed into a environmentally super-safe clean-burn COAL-SLURRY technology? Yes! Clean-burn coal slurry can produce ZERO; yes, ZERO emissions! Yes. The U.S. has sufficient coal to last a minimum of 240 years; and, if slag and other coal "burnables" are included - enough for 350 years or longer. Yes, US plants can be transformed within the next 5-10 years - if not sooner. Doing it in an environmentally acceptable manner. It boils down to a matter of political WILL! The greatest news is: the energy industry's research is complete, and most are ready to INVEST. Yes, Invest in the U.S.A.! This is an enormous step eliminating our dependence on oil! However, it must be done properly.
FIRST, some preliminary environmental MANDATORYstandards:
1. The coal slurry must consist of pulverized bituminous [or preferably anthracite coal] mixed with the highest octane combustible fuel [such as OXYGEN, HYDROGEN, GASOLINE - or, perhaps, ETHANOL - ALCOHOL? Hello? US Farmers?] etc. The Highest TEMPERATURE burn equals the cleanest burn! The highest cleanest burn equals less emission particulates produced. Fewer scrubbers.
2. Coal slurry burning must be used in conjunction with GRADUALLY built-on cogeneration plants. These reuse the waste heat and energy. All emissions, if any, terminate in settling [drying] ponds supported by rubberized sheets preventing ground penetration. The dried waste is later re-used for chemicals produced.
3. As, with PA Governor Ed Rendell, the national project should have started -yesterday. GIDDINS! Uniform standards must be set. Incredibly, all electricity producing plants can EASILY be CONVERTED to HIGH-OCTANE HIGH-TEMPERATURE clean-burn coal-slurry plants.

California's energy crisis focuses new attention on alternative energy sources.
Fifteen years ago, California was on the forefront of alternative energy use, but since then, the state has faltered. Now, perhaps just in time to help during this energy crisis, there are developments in energy research that offer promising new energy sources, including fuel cells, microturbines, as well as new progress with wind and solar technology. Environmentalists predict this crisis will finally give alternative energy the attention it deserves.
Fuel cells could soon solve many residential power concerns. Long researched by the military and automobile industry, fuel cells have another application as stationary power generators. Sometimes called the holy grail of energy research, fuel cells are small, non-polluting devices that use hydrogen and oxygen to produce energy without combustion. Fuel cells can run on a number of different substances, the most common of which is hydrogen, usually extracted from natural gas. The combination of hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell produces energy with water as its only byproduct.
Microturbines are smaller versions (about the size of a refrigerator) of traditional turbines and could be used in individual commercial buildings to reduce power costs and the threat of blackouts during peak demand times. They are substantially cleaner than traditional power generation, have very low particulate emissions, and are certified by the California Air Resources Board as a clean energy source. They run mostly on natural gas, but different models can also be fueled by propane, diesel, kerosene or methane from landfills. Environmentalists see microturbines as a great alternative to the proliferation of diesel generators that many high tech firms are using to stabilize their power supply during this energy crisis. Diesel generators are so polluting that California law limits the number of hours you can run them per year. While microturbines cost roughly ten times more than a diesel generator there are no limits on how often you can use them.
The real problem with fuel cells and microturbines is that they are not truly renewable energy sources. That's because most of them are, at this point, at least partially dependant on natural gas. That has lead many to give wind and solar technologies another look. When wind and solar technology first entered the California market many years ago, it was significantly more expensive than traditional power generation. But now wind power is the cheapest to produce, especially as natural gas prices skyrocket, and wind will always be a clean and truly renewable energy source.
In the last five years, technological breakthroughs have made solar technology far more efficient and far more price competitive. One of the advantages of solar power is its ease of use by individual homeowners, especially for solar powered water heating. There are new plans among state and federal governments to further drive down the price of solar energy production so that by 2006, it would be on par with the costs of traditional power generation.
Of these four alternative energy sources, only microturbines and solar panels are available today. Consumers can add solar panels to their homes at any time, but that likely won't have a significant effect on California's statewide crisis. But there is still hope that some of these new energy sources could alleviate the problems predicted for this summer, when peak energy demand will be higher than ever. Many say the key is getting a comprehensive energy policy in place as soon as possible- and that may require the government to provide tax credits or other incentive programs to encourage use of these technologies.
