American society may be hostile to the thought of ideologies, but it possesses a sophisticated but little understood ability to engage in deep conflicts over political ideas, while at the same time reducing adversarial positions to legitimate derivatives of American history and development. The study asks how this occurs; how the sources, traditions and usages of core ideas and their derivative compounds animate political discourse and structure the basis of political conflict; and how it is possible to sustain a high incidence of competitive value-laden argument and principled political conflict within a stable political order.
   The fundamental aim of this study is to examine the traditions and usages of American political ideas within the arena of practical politics. By locating them in their respective contexts, it will be possible to assess both their changing meanings and their shifting relationships to one another.
   In surveying America's core ideas both in isolation and in combination, the book facilitates an informed awareness of their political and cultural leverage as forms of persuasion and sources of legitimacy. American Credo roots the examination of American political ideas firmly in the milieu of social drives, political movements and contemporary issues within which the ideas themselves are embedded. This not only allows the study to investigate the interior properties and traditional priorities of America's key values but permits the theoretical implications and practical consequences of these ideas to be traced and evaluated. By marshalling a wide variety of evidence from different disciplines and perspectives, and by employing innovative principles of organisation, the study offers clarity and depth in support of an inventive explanatory scheme. It concludes with a review of the current and likely future challenges to the protocols and conventions surrounding the matrix of ideational coexistence.

The Nation's best economics reporter. Reminds us of our youth. No one roots out a story, founded in objective fact and truth, and reports it better than Christine. Also, a more than Honorable Mention to Bill Tucker. We are witnessing a new form of high quality journalism.

An amalgamation of the finest journalists, thinkers, analysts, advocates and honorable citizens in the history of broadcast journalism. The nation will not see their excellence for many years to come.

1. Kate O'Bierne: the dedication for the achievement of excellence through research and advocating her strong held conclusions.

2. To AL HUNT: for his evolution to professional excellence as a broadcast journalist and host. [Even if he did get us banned from Bryn Mawr for life.

3. To RIGHT-WING-ROBERT NOVAK aka "The Cossack": ALWAYS A MAN who TOOK A REASONED STAND. Willing to defend it to the death; be it ever so conservative. [Born on my mother's birth day. He cannot be allbad.]
Yes, the Wilson Affair was a grave mistake. But, we do judge a man by only one error of life. Giving credit where credit is due: BOBBY was the first to oppose the war; the first to call for withdrawal of the troops. Without being untrue to his principles

4. Then: there is MISS MARGARET CARLSON, our beloved favorite. We and "Uncle Bubba" will miss her the most. A supreme intellectual; coupled with a fighting spirit in defense of Truth and Righteousness. A "Catholic Kid" - as most of our participants. They were moved reading her book. Miss Margaret's insight and wisdom is correct. Our greatest thanks must go to Our Chaste and Dedicated NUNS AND PRIESTS who formulated our ethics. Our essays in damnation of the priest scandal were motivated by the inherent defamation of our beloved childhood educators.

5. Finally, last but not least - Mark Shields "The Keeper of the Flame". A loyal American dedicated to democracy. Paricles would be proud. His humor and insight is contagious. In a bar fight or combat, it is the loyal Mark Shields we would want by our side.

Also we commend The Honorable Senator John Warner for his "LOYALTY" to our embattled President.  And, for "STATESMANSHIP." Stepping forward to resolve a national crisis being willing "to take the heat of an unpopular stand."

In addition, high honors to the US NAVY for grounding its helicopters after numerous recent crashes and loss of life.  Again, "LEADERSHIP" to face problems directly; fix them and move forward.

HONORABLE Mention: To Sen. John Warner, while remaning in the background, organized legislative support.

AND, YES, TO THE PRESIDENT: Who courageously changed his mind to DO THE RIGHT THING; knowing false criticism of "CAVING-IN, CRYING UNCLE AND BEING A WEAKLING' would soon be his ridicule. Our prayers for him, all the John McCains and John Warners of the world [all HONORABLE CONSERVATIVES], and an end to the War. To please bring our kids home ASAP.
