So, it is with Google's recent agreement with the oppressive authoritarian Chinese government to cooperate in blocking free browser access to the ENTIRE WEB-INTERNET. And, the creative, liberating inherent prospects it crushed.
Goggle is not solely responsible. Microsoft, Yahoo -and other US and Western tech corporations - have participated in similar activities.
We respect the freedom of consciences of the executives and stockholders of these organizations. Each must examine their dictates of conscience, ethical behavior; and, decide future company policy in China-like autocratic regimes.
Nevertheless, we do recommend the following:
These companies form a trade association unified to establish standards of ethical and business policy and technology within all foreign nations. Acting in unison, there exists a high probability, these corporations (with the combined monetary leverage) could convince repressive governments to permit freedom of Total Internet Access within their jurisdiction. The Web can be a force for good throughout this planet. However, only if the private and public sector act responsibly to safeguard it - insisting upon it's liberty to freely communicate.
The obvious hypothetical: What if China's repressive regime refuses to cooperate, and denies access to its exponentially growing market? What to do then?
Then, we contend, from our ethical perspective, so be it! No amount of profit or money is worth the immoral complicity in the oppression of other human beings. As Jesus said: "What good is it for a man to gain the wealth of the entire World, yet in the process lose his soul?" We agree. What price character? What price a Life's future peace of mind? What is for sale, and what is too precious not to be for sale? How much money is enough?[Moreover, we need not detail the pre and post horrors of WW II.]
THIS IN ONLY OUR OPINION: If China refuses to allow intellectual and business liberty, we believe Goggle, Yahoo and Microsoft (AND ALL OTHER WESTERN CORPORATIONS) must inform the Chinese government they will cease and desist doing tech business with China. ASSERTING to China, they will urge all other western corporate providers to join with them doing the same. Yes, this goal is an achievable probability. It is simply a matter of WILL.
To each generation the torch of Liberty's safeguarding and protective responsibility is passed. Think of what inaction or continued complicity will do to the spirit and hopes of the Chinese People. Their dreams of fundamental democratic liberty cherished but viciously crushed in Tiananamen Square.
Therefore,
we appeal to these corporations (our younger brothers and sisters) to courageously pick up their generational torch of Liberty. Beam The Light of hope to the entire World. Announcing, "We lived. Yes. We, when pressed, did the right thing. Courageously meeting our moral and ethical responsibilities. We honor the ideals of the Nation from whence we came.
